Permit Flies

Permit are the signature species of Turneffe and the reason many anglers make the journey to Belize.

We recommend carrying a broad assortment of crab and shrimp patterns in multiple sizes and sink rates. Productive colors typically include tan, olive, brown, cream, and mottled crab variations. Turneffe's permit often feed over turtle grass, making olive and tan patterns particularly effective, although brighter sand-flat situations may call for lighter colored flies.

A well-rounded permit box should include both lightly weighted and medium-weight patterns to handle varying depths, currents, and wind conditions.

Tarpon Flies

Turneffe offers excellent opportunities for juvenile, resident, and migratory tarpon. Fish may be encountered in mangrove channels, lagoons, creek mouths, and deeper cuts throughout the atoll.

We recommend carrying at least 8 to 12 tarpon flies in a variety of profiles and colors. White, chartreuse, olive, black, purple, and tan baitfish patterns are all proven producers. Both natural and high-contrast colors deserve a place in your box.

Most successful tarpon flies imitate the mullet, sardines, and other baitfish commonly found throughout Belize's coastal waters.

Bonefish Flies

Bonefish are abundant throughout Turneffe and offer consistent action between permit opportunities.

A selection of 12 to 18 bonefish flies will cover most situations. Small shrimp patterns, spawning shrimp, Gotchas, and lightly weighted flats flies in tan, pink, cream, pearl, and olive should handle nearly every scenario.

Turneffe bonefish are generally eager feeders, but changing tides, cloud cover, and bottom composition often make it worthwhile to have several proven patterns available.

Barracuda Flies

Barracuda are among the most exciting visual predators on the flats and are common throughout Turneffe.

Needlefish patterns, tube flies, and long-profile baitfish flies are highly effective. Fast strips and aggressive retrieves often produce spectacular follows and explosive strikes.

We recommend carrying several dedicated barracuda flies, even if they aren't your primary target species.

Snook

Snook are often encountered around mangrove shorelines, creek mouths, and lagoon systems.

When targeting snook specifically, sparse 1/0 baitfish flies in white, olive, tan, black, and chartreuse are excellent choices. Many fish are taken opportunistically while anglers are targeting tarpon.

Carrying 3 to 6 dedicated snook flies is generally sufficient for a typical week of fishing.

The Two-of-Each Rule

One of the most common mistakes traveling anglers make is bringing only one copy of their favorite fly.

Fish are lost. Flies are damaged. The pattern that produced three eats this morning is often the only thing you want to throw all afternoon.
