Olsen's Blowtorch Jig Nymph
(Tutorial created by James St. Clair)
This is a full length fly tying tutorial on how to tie Devin Olsen's Blowtorch. Devin Olsen is a competition fly angler (for the USA Fly Fishing Team), and an accomplished fly tyer as well, with many of his patterns commercially available through Orvis. Devin created this pattern in 2014 during his travels to the Czech Republic for the World Fly Fishing Championships. It sounds like he originally designed this pattern for Chub (with the help of a fellow competitor Michael Adamcik from the CR). Since then, Devin has had great success with this pattern throughout the west for trout. I can attest to the success of this pattern. I started tying this fly 4 or 5 years ago, and they sat in my box until one fall I decided to give them a shot on my local. This pattern cleaned up for me, and is now a staple in my box for the fall season in my area. This pattern, according to Devin, has gone through a few iterations, but apparently this is his most successful version (and mine too). I'm not sure what they are taking it for, maybe a sunken ant. It also looks like a smaller version of our October Caddis that begin hatching right around September 15th each year. Either way, this pattern flat out works, and is one you can have confidence in. Additionally, it's an easy and relatively cheap tie. You can find all of the materials you need to tie this pattern @redsflyshop!
