While every angler approaches packing differently, our recommendation is to treat this list as a foundation for building a complete kit rather than selecting only a few individual patterns. Baby tarpon can be aggressive and willing, but having the right fly size, profile, and color can make a significant difference throughout your trip.
Baby Tarpon Flies
Baby tarpon are the primary target at Tarpon Town Campeche, and anglers can keep their fly selection relatively simple. Productive flies imitate the small baitfish found throughout the mangrove system and should be tied on durable saltwater hooks.
Productive colors include chartreuse, tan/white, black, and purple; all have their moments depending on water clarity and light conditions. Carry a variety of profiles, ranging from sparse baitfish patterns to fuller flies that push more water. Almost always 2/0 sized flies are going to be used in Campeche.
We recommend carrying 18 flies at a minimum for the 5-day trips we do to Campeche. You’ll practically never lose flies, but they do get beat up due to tarpon's rough mouths.
Snook Flies
Snook are not usually the primary target, but they offer an exciting bonus opportunity throughout the mangrove shorelines and structure-rich areas. When targeting snook, small white and tan baitfish are the most productive. Having a few 1/0 or #2 baitfish flies for snook is not essential but nice to have for Campeche.
Barracuda Flies
Barracuda aren’t traditionally targeted in Campeche, but they are around and can be a nice bonus. Having a couple of needlefish flies and wire leaders can be a great way to add another fish or two to your day.
The Two-of-Each Rule
One of the most common mistakes traveling anglers make is bringing only a single example of their favorite fly. Fish are lost, flies are damaged, and successful patterns often become the only thing you want to fish for an entire afternoon.

Bring at least two of every pattern you expect to fish.
