Redfish Flies

Redfish inhabit an incredibly diverse range of environments, from shallow grass flats and sandy shorelines to expansive marsh systems, oyster bars, mangrove habitats, and coastal bays. Because of this variety, no single fly pattern works everywhere.

We recommend carrying a selection of both lightly weighted and heavier flies to match changing water depths, bottom composition, tides, and water clarity. Bead chain eye patterns often excel in shallow water where a subtle presentation is important, while lead-eye flies can be more effective when fishing deeper water, stronger currents, or areas with reduced visibility.

For example, anglers fishing the Texas coast often find bead chain eye patterns such as the Lip Lettuce particularly effective when targeting redfish on shallow grass flats and firm-bottomed bays. In contrast, anglers fishing the marshes and deeper drop-offs in Louisiana are often better served with larger lead-eye flies such as the Swamp Fox, which sink more quickly and remain visible in deeper or more turbid water.

Productive colors generally include tan, brown, olive, black, white, and copper, along with patterns that incorporate flash for stained water conditions. Crab, shrimp, and baitfish imitations all deserve a place in a well-rounded redfish box, as feeding behavior can vary significantly from one fishery to another.

A complete assortment should include a variety of sizes, weights, and profiles, giving anglers the flexibility to adapt to local conditions and changing opportunities throughout the day.
