While every angler approaches packing differently, our recommendation is to treat this list as a foundation for building a complete kit rather than selecting only a few individual patterns. Espiritu Santo Bay offers incredible variety, and having the right fly in the right size, weight, and color can make all the difference during a week on the water.

Permit Flies

Permit are the marquee species of Espiritu Santo Bay. We recommend carrying a variety of crab and shrimp patterns. Productive colors often include tan, olive, brown, and mottled crab patterns. Seasonally, Sargasso grass enters the bay, which brings in floating crabs. This is becoming a staple in a permit box for ESB. Anglers should also carry some patterns with yellow eyes, in both crab and shrimp variations. This has long been a favorite of Yucatan guides.

Tarpon Flies

Espiritu Santo Bay offers exciting opportunities for juvenile and resident tarpon throughout the system. These fish can be aggressive but often demand a fly that matches local baitfish patterns. We recommend carrying at least 8 to 12 tarpon flies with a mix of natural and high-visibility colors. Baitfish streamers in white, chartreuse, olive, black, and purple are all excellent choices.

Bonefish Flies

Bonefish provide consistent action throughout the bay and are a perfect species to target between permit opportunities. A selection of at least 12 to 18 bonefish flies is recommended. Small shrimp patterns, spawning shrimp, and lightly weighted flats flies in tan, pink, cream, and olive should cover most situations. Bonefish in Espiritu Santo Bay are generally willing feeders, but having multiple patterns helps when conditions change.

Barracuda Flies

Barracuda are often the most underrated species in the fishery and can provide some of the most visual and explosive fishing of the trip. Fast-moving needlefish and tube-style barracuda flies are highly effective. We recommend carrying at least a few dedicated barracuda flies.

Snook

Snook can be caught incidentally on Tarpon or large Bonefish flies, but when targeting Snook, 1/0 sparse baitfish flies are our go to. Snook fishing in ESB can be fantastic after periods or rain or low tides. Having 3-6 of these patterns is typically plenty for a week of fishing.

The Two-of-Each Rule

One of the most common mistakes traveling anglers make is bringing only a single example of their favorite fly. Fish are lost, flies are damaged, and successful patterns often become the only thing you want to fish for an entire afternoon.

Our recommendation is simple:

Bring at least two of every pattern you expect to fish.

The best-prepared anglers usually order most, if not all, of the flies on this list, then double up on the patterns they have the most confidence in.
