While every angler approaches packing differently, our recommendation is to treat this list as a foundation for building a complete kit rather than selecting only a few individual patterns. Crooked Island offers diverse flats, turtle grass ecosystems, white sand bays, and ocean-side opportunities, and having the right fly in the right size, weight, and color can make all the difference during a week on the water.
Permit Flies
Permit on Crooked Island are the ultimate challenge. We recommend carrying a variety of crab and shrimp patterns in multiple sizes and weights. Productive colors include tan, white, and blue crab patterns that blend naturally into the Bahamian flats environment.
Permit on Crooked Island often feed on Rays, in singles or doubles most commonly. Making a quality presentation and fly selection critical. Anglers should carry both moderately weighted and heavy-weighted patterns to match varying depths and conditions. A well-stocked permit box should include a range of crab profiles along with a few shrimp imitations for fish showing different feeding behaviors. Roughly a dozen crab patterns and a half dozen shrimp flies is a good starting point for a week on Crooked.
Bonefish Flies
Crooked Island is home to excellent bonefishing with opportunities ranging from schools of eager fish to larger, more selective singles and pairs. A selection of about 18 bonefish flies is recommended.
Small shrimp patterns, spawning shrimp, Gotchas, Crazy Charlies, and lightly weighted flats flies in tan or pink should cover most situations. Bonefish throughout the Bahamas are generally receptive to well-presented flies, but changing light conditions, wind, and bottom composition can influence what works best on a given day.
Having multiple sizes and weight options allows anglers to adapt quickly as conditions change throughout the trip.
Barracuda Flies
Barracuda provide some of the most exciting visual fishing opportunities on Crooked Island. These aggressive predators are frequently encountered cruising channels, edges, and shallow flats where they can appear seemingly out of nowhere.
Fast-moving needlefish patterns, tube flies, and long-profile baitfish flies are highly effective. Bright colors such as chartreuse, white, blue, and silver often produce well, especially when stripped aggressively to trigger reaction strikes.
We recommend carrying at least a few dedicated barracuda patterns rigged on wire leaders and ready to fish. When a large barracuda suddenly appears on the flat, there is rarely time to tie one on, so it’s best to have a rod rigged if you’re interested in capitalizing on the opportunity.
The Two-of-Each Rule
One of the most common mistakes traveling anglers make is bringing only a single example of their favorite fly. Fish are lost, flies are damaged, and successful patterns often become the only thing you want to fish for an entire afternoon.
