Having a well-rounded fly box allows you to adapt to changing conditions and take full advantage of every opportunity.

While every angler packs differently, we recommend treating this list as a foundation for building a complete trout-fishing kit rather than selecting just a handful of patterns. Patagonia rewards anglers who arrive prepared for dry flies, nymphs, streamers, and everything in between.

Dry Flies

Dry-fly fishing is a highlight of many Chilean trout trips. Depending on the season and location, trout may feed aggressively on mayflies, caddis, terrestrials, beetles, and hoppers.

We recommend carrying a variety of attractor patterns and hatch-matching dries in sizes #8-20. Parachute Adams, Purple Haze, Chubby Chernobyls, Fat Alberts, beetle patterns, and caddis imitations should all have a place in your fly box.

Many anglers come to Patagonia dreaming of watching large trout rise to a dry fly, and having plenty of options helps you capitalize when conditions align.

Nymphs

Nymphing consistently produces trout throughout Chile and often saves the day when surface activity is limited.

A selection of beadhead nymphs, Perdigons, Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Prince Nymphs, and attractor patterns in sizes #12-18 will cover most situations. Tungsten-weighted flies are particularly useful on larger rivers where getting down quickly is important.

We recommend carrying a range of sizes and weights to fish everything from deep runs to shallow spring creeks.

Streamers

Big trout live in Patagonia, and streamers are often the best way to target them.

Carry streamers in white, olive, black, brown, and natural baitfish colors. Sculpin patterns, Woolly Buggers, Sparkle Minnows, Mini Dungeons, and other articulated streamers are all excellent choices.

Having a variety of sizes allows you to adapt to water clarity, river size, and trout behavior throughout the week.

Lake Flies

Many guests fish lakes during their stay, whether sight-fishing cruising trout or targeting fish near structure.

Leech patterns, dragonfly nymphs, and dries all have their place. Black, olive, and natural colors are generally reliable producers. One of the best dragonfly imitations is a rubberlegs nymph. 

Having a few balanced leeches and intermediate-water presentations can be especially effective on stillwaters.

The Two-of-Each Rule

One of the most common mistakes traveling anglers make is bringing only a single example of their favorite fly.

Flies are lost in trees, broken off on large fish, and occasionally become the only thing trout seem willing to eat all afternoon.

Our recommendation is simple:

Bring at least two of every pattern you expect to fish.

The best-prepared anglers usually bring a broad selection and then double up on the patterns they trust most.
