Tying The Pan Handler Hobo Spey // w. Hayden Williams

Built for the steelheader who doesn’t mind getting a little dirt under their nails (or sand in their drag), the Pan Handler Hobo Spey is a stripped-down, get-it-done fly designed for swing fanatics, bank bums, and anyone chasing chrome on a budget. With a buggy silhouette, subtle movement, and just enough flash to spark curiosity in pressured fish, this pattern delivers reliable eats from tidewater to tailouts.

Materials Needed:

To tie the Pan Handler, you'll need the following:

  • Tube: Aqua Flies Tube Kit includes a tube needle for your vise, tubes to tie on, ultra tubing for your junction tubing, hooks, and two of the lavender cone head Hayden uses in this pattern

  • Thread: Veevus 6/0 Black

  • Body: UV Purple Ice Dub, Red Strung Guinea, Fish Hunter Black Marabou, Fish Hunter Select Schlappen in black, Flashabou, and cap it off with a lavender cone head

  • Adhesive: Super Glue or Loctite Brush-On to lock things in place

  • Optional: Tie this baby in ANY color combination you can think of - it is super adaptable!

🌀 Want to see it in action? Watch the video above and follow along as we break down each step of the tie.

Grab the Kit or Build Your Own

You can purchase the Pan Handler Kit for a one-and-done grab-all, or shop our store for individual materials if you're already stocked on a few essentials. Either way, we’ve got you covered. (Red flashabou has been upgraded to pearl for extra shimmer)

Meet Our Tying Team:

Hayden Williams is an accomplished fly tyer with a sharp eye for detail and a knack for creating patterns that just plain catch fish. With years of experience behind the vise and on the water, Hayden brings deep knowledge of materials, techniques, and the art of matching the hatch. He’s as “fishy” as they come—equally at home swinging a spey fly through steelhead runs, drifting nymphs for trout, or dialing in the perfect proportions on a new pattern. Whether tying classics or experimenting with fresh designs, Hayden approaches every fly with creativity, precision, and a commitment to producing the highest-quality work. We’re thrilled to have him on our team and can’t wait to see what he brings to the bench next.
