Steve “Bogey” Bogardus wears two hats at Red’s Fly Shop—one as a thoughtful and enthusiastic fly fishing guide, and the other as the lightning-fast shipping manager responsible for getting your gear to your doorstep at record speed. If your order arrives with suspiciously quick precision, you can bet Bogey and his dialed-in crew were behind it.
Bogey taught himself to fly cast while camping in the North Cascades, driven by curiosity and a love of the outdoors. He grew up in Bothell, Washington, and now calls Ellensburg home. Some of his fondest memories are from fishing and camping with his parents, and that same sense of joy and simplicity shines through in every trip he guides. His first official guided day on the water? Right here at Red’s.

Just wanted to reach out and let you all know what a gem of an employee you have in Bogey. He was super knowledgeable, able to answer all of my random questions and also able to help me with my transaction. As an employer myself, it is hard to find good staff these days. Just wanted to reach out and say he's a keeper! Thanks so much!

Thank you, Sir! Top notch customer service, and the flies are great. I’ve recommended your shop to the group of anglers I fish with in the southern Yucatán. Great to know the team stands behind the products and service. Top notch! You’ve definitely earned my repeat business.

"Another terrific float trip with Bogey! He did an excellent job managing the boat and gear, and his coaching on casting and mending really helped improve my technique. He knew exactly where to fish and made the whole day smooth, fun, and productive. I’ll definitely book again—and request Bogey when I do. Thanks to the Red’s team for another great experience!"

When it comes to fly fishing, Bogey is all about seasonal nuance—give him Skwala dry fly eats in March or delicate Blue-Winged Olive hatches in the fall and he’s in his element. He’s guided extensively on the Yakima River and has even hosted anglers to Christmas Island. His favorite species to chase is the Cutthroat Trout, and when he’s not on the water, you’ll find him camping, fishing for fun, or working on his disc golf game. You might also find him in the kitchen—he’s a surprisingly skilled home chef.
Bogey’s ideal client? Easy-going, ready to learn, and not afraid to laugh at a corny joke or two (he’s got a few dialed). His guide “superpower,” if you ask him, is making anyone laugh, and that levity is part of what makes a day with Bogey so memorable. His go-to fly? The Spanish Bullet Frenchy—it just gets it done.
When he’s not guiding or shipping packages like a legend, Bogey enjoys life in Ellensburg with his wonderful girlfriend, Christan, and their three cats: Kumquat, Kiwi, and Bug. His dream trip? Chasing Golden Dorado in Argentina. His top advice for beginners? “Less is more!!!” Simple, effective, and straight from someone who’s been there. Oh, and if he could have dinner with anyone? Will Ferrell, no question.
