SKYLER LANCASTER

GUIDE, SHOP STAFF, HUNTING GUIDE, AND INSTRUCTOR
Meet Skyler Lancaster

Meet Skyler Lancaster

Skyler Lancaster, born and raised in Selah, Washington, brings a lifetime of local knowledge and outdoor passion to the Red’s Fly Shop team. Known for his unmatched enthusiasm, he thrives as both a fly fishing guide and upland hunting expert. Whether navigating the waters of the Yakima or stalking game birds, Skyler’s love for the outdoors is infectious, making every outing memorable for his guests.

Skyler’s fly fishing journey began on the small waters of Ahtanum Creek, where his father first taught him to cast. Those early lessons set the foundation for a lifelong passion. Among his favorite memories is hiking the Kanektok River, mouse fly in hand, targeting big trout and chasing adventure. From the moment he stepped onto the river, Skyler knew guiding would be more than a job—it would be a calling.

"Fishing with me is about more than just catching fish—it's about having a good time, learning something new, and making memories on the water. I’ll keep the vibe light, share some laughs, and make sure the day is as enjoyable as it is productive."

Skyler's Testimonials

“Skyler was the best.”

Skyler’s instruction was clear, calm, and incredibly effective. He made the trip what it was for us—fun, educational, and relaxing. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Red’s is lucky to have him on the team.

"Skyler is a great teacher—patient, clear, and confident in his students."

I took the Drift Boat Rowing Lesson with Skyler Lancaster and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Skyler took the time to explain each step of the process and what he was doing before I got in the rowing seat. He trusts that the student is going to do the right thing, which takes real skill as an instructor.

One of the most valuable things I learned was how to read water and understand how that affects boat safety. Skyler listened to my needs before diving into instruction, which made the learning process much smoother.

Red’s made booking the class super easy. If I had one suggestion, it would be to provide a little more guidance on what to wear for specific classes—especially for folks new to the sport.

Overall, I’d absolutely recommend this course to anyone looking to build confidence behind the oars.

“Skyler made a father-son trip unforgettable.”

Skyler worked hard all day and gave thoughtful instruction to both my son and me. He made us feel confident and helped us land more big rainbows than we ever have before. I live in California, and my son lives in Washington—this kind of quality time is everything, and Skyler made it all the more special.

“Patient and encouraging—especially with beginners.”

My boat partner was brand new to fly fishing, and Skyler guided him through every step with patience and clarity. Even when we got tangled, he stayed positive and kept us focused on the fun. He’s an enthusiastic young guide with a bright future.

“Great with kids and first-timers.”

Skyler helped my friend’s child catch their first fish and handled the entire experience with kindness and encouragement. He’s not just a great angler—he’s a natural teacher and makes the day feel easy and fun for everyone on board.

Early Casting and Fly Fishing Roots

Early Casting and Fly Fishing Roots

Skyler guided his first trip during the Yakima River’s iconic Skwala hatch and hasn’t looked back since. He has since expanded his expertise to the Naches and Klickitat Rivers, where his skills with a spey rod truly shine. Though proficient in all techniques, Skyler’s heart lies in swinging flies—a method he finds both rewarding and poetic. He’s dedicated to helping clients learn and grow, sharing his knowledge with humor and patience.

When not guiding, Skyler can be found hunting upland birds, chasing fish, or tying flies. An accomplished camp chef, he’s equally comfortable preparing a gourmet meal in the field as he is landing a cutthroat trout. Skyler’s dog, Digger, a six-year-old American Brittany, is a loyal companion on many of his outdoor adventures.

A Passion for Sharing the Outdoors

A Passion for Sharing the Outdoors

Skyler’s ideal client is someone eager to learn, with a good sense of humor to match. His guiding philosophy is simple: less is more, and slowing down often leads to the best results. He hopes every guest leaves with not just improved skills but a deeper appreciation for the experience. “I want people to have a memorable trip they’ll look back on with a smile,” he says.

Skyler’s dream trip would take him to the world’s finest steelhead waters, rod in hand, ready for the swing of a lifetime. A devoted student of the sport, he’d love to have dinner with fly fishing legend Lefty Kreh, whose teachings continue to inspire generations. For Skyler, it’s all about sharing the craft, the adventure, and the joy of being immersed in the wild.
