TRAVEL MANAGER & GUIDE
Meet ERIC NICKUM

Meet ERIC NICKUM

Eric Nickum's journey into the world of fly fishing began with an unexpected lesson from his elementary school principal. After school one day, his principal introduced him to the basics of fly casting, sparking a passion that has guided his life ever since. Born and raised outside of Redmond, WA, Eric has called Ellensburg home for the past six years.

Eric’s fondest memory on the water is a steelheading adventure with friends and fellow guides, Bobby and Max from Red’s. The day was filled with both triumph and comedy—many fish were landed, some were lost, and Eric even managed to go for an unexpected swim mid-river. It’s memories like these that remind him why he loves guiding.

Having started his guiding career on the Yakima River, Eric now guides on a variety of waters including the Naches, Yakima, Klickitat, and even bass fisheries. While his favorite species to fish for is Bonefish, he thrives on the hunting aspect of pursuing them in shallow waters. Whether it's a day on the river or exploring new hunting grounds, Eric’s adventurous spirit extends to big game hunting, and he’s recently taken his first bear and deer. His latest obsession—shed hunting and chasing Chukars with a pointing dog—keeps him busy when he's not guiding.

"Fly fishing adventures abroad aren’t just about the fish—they’re about immersing yourself in new cultures, exploring untouched waters, and experiencing the kind of challenge that only the world's most remote spots can offer. Every trip brings a new story, a new connection with nature, and a reminder of why we fish in the first place."

– Eric Nickum @ Red's Fly Shop

Eric loves introducing newcomers to the sport, and his ideal client is anyone who enjoys learning and having fun. He’s particularly passionate about prospecting with large dry flies, especially stoneflies and hoppers, and believes there’s no better way to enjoy trout fishing than drifting a big dry along the bank. When it comes to fishing, Eric emphasizes the importance of practice, particularly casting. For beginners, he advises taking lessons and practicing to become a better caster, knowing that it’s the key to success in any fishing situation.

In addition to guiding, Eric has a remarkable memory that serves him well on the water. He recalls details about specific spots and secret fly patterns from previous seasons, which allows him to provide clients with an unforgettable experience. For Eric, it’s not just about catching fish; it’s about making lasting memories, and he hopes his guests leave with a desire to return to the water soon.

Eric’s dream trip would be to fish the Cosmoledo Atoll in the Seychelles, considered by many to be the pinnacle of saltwater fly fishing for Giant Trevally and Bonefish. But for now, he’s content spending hosting trips to other worldwide destinations and making the most of his days in the field here in the Cascades. He loves to hunt Chukar with his German Short Hair named Doc, and scouring the mountains for big game when he's not fly fishing.

When asked "What fly can you not live without?" Eric's answer was a practical one. "Don't leave home without a San Juan Worm! It will help make the most out of day in muddy water.

If Eric could sit down for dinner with anyone past or present, he said that he would love to meet Robby Denning, a down-to-earth author and mule deer hunter whose books have had a huge impact on Eric's approach to hunting and life.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner, Eric’s guided trips are a perfect opportunity to learn, grow, and discover the thrill of fly fishing and learn more about nature. His well-rounded knowledge base is an informational smorgasbord for guests in his boat or on his trips abroad.
