Bay Flats Lodge Fly Fishing for Redfish

TEXAS COAST REDFISH

Our hosted fly fishing trips to Bay Flats Lodge are designed to remove every barrier between you and a great first saltwater experience. Red’s Fly Shop coordinates organized groups and assigns a dedicated host to travel with you, while our team handles booking, planning, and logistics from start to finish. These trips are intentionally stress-free: easy travel within the domestic U.S., no passport headaches, and no need to commit to a full week off work. You get an authentic saltwater flats experience in just a few days, making this the most approachable and efficient hosted trip we offer—especially for anglers new to the salt.

Fishing in Texas means English-speaking guides who can clearly articulate how to present flies, manage shots, adjust casting angles, and execute the right strategy for each situation—skills that pay dividends when you eventually travel to more remote destinations where English may be a second language. Redfish are visual, aggressive, and forgiving, making them far more approachable than Bonefish, Permit, or Tarpon, and ideal for building confidence on the flats. Combined with excellent accommodations, outstanding food, and genuine Texas hospitality, Bay Flats Lodge delivers a polished, high-value introduction to saltwater fly fishing that consistently exceeds expectations.

THE BAY FLATS LODGE

Our first experience at Bay Flats Lodge was a personal scouting trip by Joe Rotter and Eric Nickum from our travel team, and it exceeded expectations at every turn. The lodge is located at the marina and offers extremely comfortable accommodations. This makes it easy to relax, focus on fishing, and recharge after a day on the flats.

From friendly, professional guides and quality poling skiffs to excellent food and top-notch Texas hospitality, the entire program runs seamlessly. Located in Seadrift, Texas, Bay Flats Lodge is an easy drive from Austin, Houston, or San Antonio—making arrival simple and setting the tone for a smooth, enjoyable stay from start to finish.

NO GEAR REQUIRED, STRESS FREE

This is about as stress-free as a saltwater flats trip gets. At Bay Flats Lodge, anglers don’t need to supply any of their own gear—no saltwater rods to buy, no specialty flies to pack—and our host coordinates all ground transfers from start to finish. On our initial trip, we flew into Austin, Texas, where flights were easy to book and affordable, and we never had to check a bag, making airport transfers simple and efficient. The accommodations are borderline luxurious for a fishing trip, the food is genuinely over-the-top good, and the lodge’s location right at the marina means boat rides are typically under 30 minutes, maximizing time on the water. Add in top-notch guides who clearly explain what’s required in each situation, and a fishery that’s incredibly forgiving for anyone who can make a reasonable cast, and you’ve got the perfect entry point to saltwater flats fishing—without the intimidation, hassle, or learning curve that comes with more complex destinations.

The Red's Hosted Experience

This trip is designed to be seamless from the moment you land. A Red’s team member will travel with the group and coordinate everything on the ground—including securing a rental van and doing all the driving—making ground transportation a complete non-issue. Traveling as a coordinated group is simply more organized, safer, more enriching, and flat-out more fun, and having one of our own along means we’re intimately familiar with the itinerary and fully up to speed on changing plans or conditions in real time. Your host works closely with the team at Bay Flats Lodge to coordinate ground transfers, assign guides, align expectations, and troubleshoot anything that comes up. They’ll mentor anglers as needed, collaborate with the head guide on pairings, and make group-wide decisions that best serve all Red’s customers. We have a vested interest in the group’s success—and while we’re there to do some fishing, first and foremost we’re there to make sure your trip is as efficient, rewarding, and enjoyable as possible.

SINGLE ANGLERS WELCOME

Single anglers are always welcome on our worldwide hosted fly fishing trips, and we take great care in pairing guests to ensure a fun and rewarding experience. We’ll match you with a roommate and assign you a fishing partner for each day on the water, sometimes keeping pairs consistent and other times rotating to give everyone a well-rounded experience. Many solo travelers join our trips because we have a strong track record of fostering a great group dynamic, mixing anglers and guides to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all. While we strive to accommodate individual preferences, flexibility is key, as our primary goal is to rotate guide assignments and maximize opportunities for every guest. We simply ask our single anglers to embrace the adventure, go with the flow, and enjoy the incredible fishing!
