Tip of the Week: WAIT! Then make a game plan to strategically get after actively feeding fish.
Want to become that confident, self-guided angler? Check out our University of Fly Fishing where we teach all of these tips and skills to help you become the angler you aspire to be.
We’ve all been there. Or at least we wish we’ve all been there. You walk or float into a run and witness a handful of large trout actively feeding on top! What you do next matters.
We want to encourage you to WAIT. Be patient and watch the run for a few minutes. You will be surprised what you find. How many different fish are feeding? Where are the fish coming from? Is it an upstream eat or a downstream. What is the timing of their feeding pattern? Is it a slow eat or a fast eat? If the fish is large and you hooked it, how would you have to fight the fish to keep it out of the various obstacles? All these things should be considered.
If you walk into the run and cast at the most recent feeder, you might miss the chance at a closer, bigger fish. Study the run, when you find the fish you want, strategically place yourself to make the best cast at the fish. As well, take note of your exit strategy so you can get fish to the net.
Summary: Bottom line here is be a thinking angler. Patience will wise you up so you can discern the best plan of attack.
