Fly Fishing Tip and Upcoming Courses: Red's University of Fly Fishing

Angler with a gorgeous fish on a PERSONAL WATERCRAFT FISHALONG

Hello from Red's University of Fly Fishing!

Quick Tip: Find the Right Depth + Speed Combo

No matter how you’re fishing — dry fly, nymph, streamer, indicator, tight line, or dry-dropper — you’re always searching for the same basic thing: the right depth + speed combination.

Fish don’t hold everywhere. They hold where they feel safe, can conserve energy, and still have food coming to them.

That depth/speed combo can change throughout the day with light, temperature, bug activity, flows, and fishing pressure. So before you change flies, ask yourself:

Am I fishing the right depth?
Am I fishing the right speed?

Explore different types of water until you find the depth and speed combination that fits the conditions. When you find that, you will very likely find the fish.er

Upcoming Courses

The beginning of July comes with a ton of opportunities to get on the water, explore new techniques, and learn new fisheries with the Red’s Fly Shop team. You do not need to be enrolled in the University of Fly Fishing to jump into these classes.

If you would like to crush the learning curve, check into joining our UNIVERSITY OF FLY FISHING.

Classes are open to anglers both inside and outside the University program, and several dates are already filling or sold out. If you see a course that fits your schedule or targets a skill you want to build, we recommend jumping in early.
