TIP OF THE WEEK: TROUT SPEY HOOK SET.

TIP OF THE WEEK: TROUT SPEY HOOK SET.

"IF YOU LIFT, YOU LOSE!"

I've seen it too many times.  People throw a beautiful spey cast, mend their line and start to swing.  I watch them drift off into their proper state of Trout Spey Zen and then WHAM!!!  They are so surprised by the grab that they set the hook like they are on some farm pond in Kansas ripping the lips off of a large mouth bass ;-).  If you set the hook like this in Trout Spey, more often than not, you will come up empty.

Can’t trout set when Spey Fishing. You need to let the trout hook themselves. So the question becomes, “What is the best way to help them hook themselves?”

PRO-TIP: Trout Spey Hook-Set
Tighten your drag up on your reel a bit heavier than normal. Once you have blasted your cast out there, mended your line and are starting to swing, get your hand off the line. When you get the grab, leave your rod low and let the fish eat on a heavy drag.once the weight becomes constant, seal the deal by slightly raising your rod to the down river side and finally come down and towards the downriver bank.

We teach the above technique and many more in our Fishalong Courses.  Come join us in one of these to squash that learning curve.  This is just one of the hundred skills that you could gain by joining our University of Fly Fishing.
