Steve Joyce’s journey into fly fishing began on Big Spring Creek near Lewistown, Montana, where a friend and his dad introduced him to the sport at just 10 years old. Later, working at Big Bear Sporting Goods in high school, Steve honed his skills on the Big Horn River with an enthusiastic group of anglers.
A Montana native, Steve grew up in Billings before attending Carroll College in Helena, where he played football and kickstarted his guiding career with Paul Roos Outfitters. In 2000, a life-changing float down the Yakima River canyon inspired him to acquire Red’s Fly Shop, turning a passion into a thriving business.

Steve’s favorite fishing memory? That inaugural float on the Yakima—casting big dry flies to hungry trout. It was a day that cemented his vision for creating a hub for anglers in the area. His guiding experience spans the legendary waters of Montana (Big Horn, Missouri, Smith, and Blackfoot), the wild rivers of Chile (Palena and Futaleufu), and Washington’s Yakima, Naches, and Klickitat.
When not guiding, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, camping, and hunting upland birds, deer, and elk. His wife Natalie, a physical therapist, and their three kids—Elaine, Henry, and Norah—share his love for the outdoors. Steve’s four-legged companions include two English setters, a lab, and Oscar, the family’s one-eyed cat.
A fan of small dry flies and spey fishing, Steve believes in savoring every moment on the water. “Look for bighorn sheep, admire the sunset, and enjoy a cold beverage,” he advises beginners. “There’s more to a successful day than counting fish.”
With over 30 years of guiding experience, Steve’s “superpower” is his longevity and adaptability. No matter the conditions or skill level of his clients, he ensures every trip is fun, educational, and memorable.
While his dream trip includes chasing sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego, Steve still gets excited about every day spent on the river—especially when his clients leave looking forward to their next adventure.
