We get it! It’s tempting to start at the head of the run and fish down at the fish. In particular, when you are in a watercraft that you can fish on the move. However, when fishing down to the fish, you will no doubt spook more fish. The tip of the week this week pertains to boats, rafts and personal watercraft, but is absolutely beneficial to walk and wade fishing.
THE TIP: Whenever possible, float past the fishy seam and give yourself plenty of space to anchor on the inside, well past the head of the run. Then fish up that seam to the fish, finishing at the head.
By fishing up, the first thing these fish see will be your fly. Not you, stomping in the river or one of their family members or friend getting drug around the river. Basically, you can pick off each fish as you move up the river. This technique is super doable with a personal watercraft. I will typically float past the honey hole and then stay in my Watermaster as I move up the river. The Watermaster is a dream because you can use it as your own personal walker as you wade up river from station to station.
Summary:
It's always better to fish up a run as not to spook the fish. You can accomplish this while floating. You will need to float in the main seam, heaviest flow, staying out of the fishy seem. Once you get to the bottom of the run, bring your craft to the bank on the inside and begin fishing up the run.
