Fishing Story
Trout and trout anglers alike love a good "hot spot" so we incorporated this into our new "split back" mayfly nymph called RIO's Bubble Up May. This fly is tied on a barbless jig hook to keep it riding with the correct alignment - whether fished as dropper in a Euro rig, under an indicator, or alone. The "v rib" body provides a little bit of weight and keeps the fly slender, as well as making it look extremely realistic, while the picked out dubbing thorax perfectly imitates legs struggling in the water. Tied with a "poly" tail that reflects light and gives yet another the indication of life, we love this fly trailed behind small attractor dries.
Design Story
In February of 2020, Simon emailed us about a fly from New Zealand called Hubert's Bismarck and asked us if we could add something like this to our lineup. The most attractive features of this fly were that it had a vinyl-ribbed body, and used picked out dubbing for legs - making it look extremely lifelike and real. At the same time, we wanted to develop a mayfly emerger tied in the popular "split back" style - where the wing pad looks like it has cracked open signaling the emergence process. We opted to combine these two thoughts into a unique variation of our own, and put it on a barbless jig hook to create one of the most successful flies we have ever created.
