This setup is a perfect blueprint for building or buying a Permit fishing setup. We love a 9 weight rod as it seems to have the power to turn over that heavy crab in the wind, but still lands soft enough when you have to put a cast on a tailing fish in the skinny water.

The reel matters. A super-charged Permit on a 16# leader requires some finesse. A sloppy drag on a fast runner can result in a busted off fish and a trophy lost. Invest in a good reel. About half of your Permit shots will happen from a boat, so a sealed drag system isn't as essential as a rod that will get drug around on the flats like Bonefish. We like both sealed and non-sealed drags for Permit.

Your fly line should be a tropical floating line that features a taper capable of turning over heavy crab flies in a gale. The line we offer up here is built for just that application. Finally, we like to put super strong 65# backing on these setups. Once you spool up a 9 weight there is a chance that this reel might have to deal with some rough customers and after that fish takes 100 yards of backing you'll be glad you went with the good stuff!
