The Perfect Bonefish Setup for Cuba

While you don't have to mimic this exact rig, this is a great setup to model your setup around. Fast action, saltwater rods in the 7-9 weight category are appropriate. The most popular bonefish rod for Cuba is a 9’ 8 weight.

Sturdy reels with reliable saltwater drags, in sizes matching the rod are needed. Have a minimum of 175 yards of 30lb backing. Floating lines in tropical coatings are all that is needed for bonefish. Bonefish are notorious for long fast runs and then they let reel them all the way back before they take another run. Be prepared for them run. Set the hook and set the reel do the work.

9’-10’ saltwater leaders for Bonefish are best. Most all guides in Cuba will recommend these to be 16lb. It is also important to have spools of Fluorocarbon tippet in 12-16 pound in case necessary.

People can go crazy with Bonefish flies, having hundreds and hundreds with them. More is better than less, but most important is to have a variety of sizes, weights and colors.
