The Perfect Setup for Baby Tarpon and Snook
Fishing up and around the mangroves for both Baby Tarpon and Snook require a rod that loads easy at close range, and has the ability to cast with finesse and distance control. We like a rod and line combination that will make pushing baitfish patterns and other mangrove critter bugs accurately at 30-40'.
While this rod will certainly throw shots to 80+ feet, it's really nice to cast up close and feather the throttle for soft landing and skipping flies up under the brush. The fly line will load easy for short casts especially quick shots that need to be made as Baby Tarpon sometimes just show out of no-where! We don't like shooting head style lines for these situations, as they are very hard to control distance with. You'll wind up snagged in the mangroves constantly.
This rod will stay in the boat most of the time with very little exposure to sand and water. For this reason a sealed or non-sealed drag system is appropriate.
