The Perfect Bonefish Setup for Ascension Bay
While you don't have to mimic this exact rig, this is a great setup to model your setup around. A reel with a sealed drag is important as you'll be wading a lot and it's likely your reel takes a dunk and has exposure to the sand. The ideal fly line is lightly tapered for the most delicate presentations.
Ascension Bay features shallow water situations requiring delicate presentations with lightly weighted flies. The perfect rod would be a strong 7 weight rod, capable of blasting flies into the wind but light enough to land a fly softly on tailing fish.
Because of the clear water a pure Fluorocarbon leader is best. We like a 10# leader as many of the Bonefish can be cruising in groups and a light leader is less likely to spook fish in the immediate area of your cast.
