Girls With Grit // Fly Fishing Collective

"Introducing Fly Fishing to Women with a Fun, Efficient, and Inclusive Format"

Girls with Grit Fly Fishing Collective

Maybe you want to try fly fishing.... but you prefer to do it with the girls. And it might be more fun if there are a few other outdoor activities involved! Mix it up. When you first get started at something it's a big committment to completely imerse yourself in it. Now you don't have to!

Our Women's Intro Program is headed up by Shannon Mahre, she's a good friend and on her way to becoming a heck of angler. Her specialty is helping women become successful outdoor athletes, regardless of the activity. This includes fly fishing!

Building a Community

We believe learning to fly fish should be fun, simple, and affordable. Our instructors take a light hearted but genuinely invested approach to teaching all our courses, especially the women's intro class. If we don't make it fun and effective, the liklihood of that student finding success is essentially nill. It's important that we do a great job.

Beginning anglers are the lifeblood of our business and this motivates our team to take great care and pride in making sure your introduction to fly fishing is the best it can possibly be. While students are welcome to visit for a single day or weekend, these intro courses are only the first step in becoming a successful angler.

If you love the intro course, we encourage you to explore enrollment options in the Red's University of Fly Fishing where continuting education is the theme. Varying seasons, experiences, and disciplines will help you become a knowledable and skillful angler capable of traveling to new ecosystems throughout the west.

What's the Fishing Class Like?

The Women's Intro courses are taught here at Red's Fly Shop along the banks of the Yakima River. These are land based courses so students don't need any of their own gear to participate, we have you covered. It's a comfortable environment with espresso available at check-in.

Our intro course has a strong emphasis on learning to fly cast. It's the most fun and some might even say addictive! You'll learn a bit about where trout live and how to tie on a fly.

Women's Intro to Fly Fishing:

  • Understanding Fly Rods, Reels, and Line
  • Intro to Fly Casting
  • Where Trout Live
  • How to Tie on a Fly

"I didn't realize it would be so much fun! My younger sister signed us up and it turned out to be the best day ever."

- Callie B, Roslyn, WA

What Else Are We Doing?

We see the most success when we have a few options, especially if you are staying at Canyon River Lodge and would like to make the most out of your visit. Some ladies will do the full meal deal that includes morning yoga, fly fishing class, a break for lunch, and then an afternoon hike (often in the spring wildflowers)! You don't have to sign up for all the events, if a basic learn to fly fish class is what you are after... just book that.
