Born and raised in Centralia, WA, Camrin Johnson has traveled the world as a U.S. Marine, eventually finding his permanent home in Ellensburg, WA. His fly fishing journey began one summer at Red’s Fly Shop, where he traded the rigors of ranching for the river. It was shop staffer Roger who first taught him to cast, and the passion grew as he spent every free moment fishing with newfound friends, including the legendary Joe Rotter. Now, after over a decade at Red’s, Camrin continues to learn and share his expertise with others.
Camrin’s most cherished memory in fly fishing dates back to his first experience casting a fly rod. After a quick lesson, he took his new setup to the river, landed two big trout, and was hooked for life. Today, he loves guiding others on the Yakima and Naches Rivers, sharing his enthusiasm for all aspects of fly fishing—from the excitement of dry fly fishing to the precision of Euro Nymphing.

“Cam is the man.”
Everything about our day with Cam was spot on. He’s knowledgeable, upbeat, and knows how to keep things fun and relaxed while still helping you improve. One of the best days I’ve had on the river—Cam is the man.

“Patient, positive, and all about having fun.”
Cam guided us through tough winter conditions using a variety of techniques and always kept a positive attitude. His coaching style was easygoing but effective, and he clearly knows the river and where the fish live. Red’s sets a high bar, and Cam is a big part of that.

“Just the right amount of guidance.”
Cameron gave clear, helpful casting instruction without over-teaching or micromanaging. He let us learn at our pace and made sure the trip aligned with our goals for the day. Everything felt easy and enjoyable, from the moment we arrived until we loaded up after the float.

“Helped make the day feel special.”

When not guiding, Camrin enjoys life outdoors with his family, including his wife, daughter, and an impressive array of animals—six horses, seven cattle, and a pack of beloved dogs. He often combines his passions for horseback riding, upland bird hunting, and fly fishing, strapping a rod to his saddle as he explores new waters.
Camrin’s dream is to ride and fish his way through every U.S. national park, with Glacier National Park to Canada topping his list. A natural problem-solver, he’s known for teaching clients with patience and humor, offering advice like, “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” to help beginners develop good habits from the start.
His ideal client is someone eager to learn, respectful of conservation, and ready to embrace the full adventure of fly fishing or upland bird hunting. Camrin’s guiding “superpower” is untangling lines with ease, and his hope is that every guest leaves with a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and the adventures it offers.
If Camrin could share a meal with anyone, past or present, it would be Theodore Roosevelt, a kindred spirit who embodied the spirit of exploration and conservation. And when it comes to the one trout fly he can’t live without? The Chubby Chernobyl—it’s a sure bet for hungry mountain stream trout across the Pacific Northwest.
