Hatches Upcoming and Current:

It's that time again, folks—we’re going full-on Hoot Owl mode starting in the next 24 hours. With afternoon water temps creeping up near 70 degrees, it’s time to shift gears and give our finned friends a break. That means all of our guided trips will run in the morning only, or we’ll head upriver where the water is cooler and trout are happier.

Fishing this morning in the Canyon was solid—trout were hanging under shady banks and behind mid-river rocks like it’s their summer job. But as temps rise, we’re prioritizing quick hook sets, fast fights, and speedy releases. Keep those fish wet, handle them gently, and let them get back to doing trout things—like sipping bugs and growing bigger for your next trip.

We’re proud of how healthy this fishery is right now—it’s the best it’s been in years—and we credit that to years of voluntary Hoot Owl practices and a team that truly gives a damn. So get up early, fish hard, and help us keep the Yakima thriving. Mornings are prime time, and the afternoons? That’s trout nap time. Let’s give ’em the rest they deserve.

The Naches has dropped into ideal wading shape, and the cutthroat are on the feed. Small to mid-sized terrestrials are getting crushed in riffles, pockets, and along shady banks, much like the Yak, earlier the better as low water levels heat fast. Float season is pretty much in the rearview, the water’s too skinny for safe drifts, but guided wade trips are still a fantastic way to experience this wild, remote river. If you want to cover water, find sneaky holding lies, and enjoy classic freestone fishing with eager fish and zero crowds, now’s the time.

Need something totally different? Bass are on the menu. Largemouth are active at Hilltop Lake, our private oasis, and Smallmouth season is in swing on an unnamed river we won’t mention here (because it’s too good). If you’re looking to shake things up, email dallas@redsflyshop.com to check for available Smallmouth dates.

Bottom line? Flows are up, bugs are out, and the fishing’s only going to get better in the coming weeks. Pick your target, book your trip, and let’s go fishing.
