Yakima River Fishing Report – Get Up, Get Out, Get Bent
Cold Front = Hot Fishing
We’ve got a gift from the weather gods incoming this weekend—cool temps and rain. Just what the trout ordered. With flows now under 3,000 cfs, wading the Yakima is back on the table in some spots. Things are lining up for a great window of opportunity.
We’re still running voluntary Hoot Owl hours, keeping our guides off the water by midday to protect the fish. Mornings are gold—6 a.m. launches mean cool water, soft light, and rested fish. It’s been one of the best seasons in years, and we’re not about to let warm water ruin the vibe.
What’s Working
Dry flies are working early, especially when the light is low and the shadows are long. By late morning, most of the action shifts subsurface. One thing that’s been different this year is where the trout are holding. After a rollercoaster runoff and irrigation bumps in July, many fish never returned to the edges. Mid-channel slots, drop-offs, and deeper seams are where you’ll find them. The guides have been quietly crushing it in the sneaky spots—follow their lead.
Wading Options
The Naches and Tieton Rivers are prime for wading right now. Terrestrials are the name of the game—ants, beetles, bees, and anything that looks like it stumbled out of a hayfield. Dry-droppers are a solid choice for covering the water as the morning wears on.
Steelhead on the Klickitat? Yup.
We're starting to see some encouraging early signs on the Klickitat River. Steelhead season is shaping up, and we’ve still got a few prime dates left at the Steelhead Lodge this fall. If you’re even thinking about it—book now. Don’t wait for someone else to plan your fishing trip. Let’s go swing for glory.
