Step into the world of angling wonder with our premier fly fishing camp crafted exclusively for youths aged 13-18. Nestled amidst the PNW's finest fly fishing, our camp offers a blend of adventure and education that's bound to ignite a lifelong passion for fishing. We want kids fly fishing!
From the Blue Ribbon waters of the Yakima River Canyon to a local lake, campers will hone their skills under expert guidance. Camp includes a drift boat fishing adventure, lake expedition, and wade fishing escapades on the Naches River, participants will not only learn the art of fly fishing but also deepen their understanding of aquatic ecosystems and conservation principles. It's 70% fishing, 30% indirect ecology, sportsmanship, and natural science. We don't even have to push it on 'em, education just happens!
Every cast is a moment of discovery and every catch is a triumph. Don't miss the chance to reel in new skills, forge lasting friendships, and create memories to last a lifetime at our educational fly fishing camp!
Camp Basics
We believe learning to fly fish should be fun, simple, and affordable. Our instructors take a lighthearted but genuinely invested approach to teaching all our courses, especially the youth camp. If we don't make it fun and effective, the likelihood of that student finding success is essentially nill. It's important that we do a great job.
Beginning anglers are the lifeblood of our business and the future of our sport. This motivates our team to take great care and pride in making sure your child's introduction to fly fishing is the best it can possibly be.
Fun, friendly, and educational. We have caring instructors that understand kids. We are involved in youth sports, many of us are parents, and we are interested in your kids success. You can trust us to be classy, respectful, and good mentors for your kids.
Our camp has emphasis on sportsmanship, etiquette, and having fun doing it. The catching will take care of itself if the students are inspired and having fun. Our goal is that kids can learn, adventure, and do so in a fashioned that promotes teamwork and kindness. The rest is easy, kids love catching fish and are highly motivated.
Our intro course has a strong emphasis on learning to fly cast. It's the most fun and some might even say addictive! Plus kids learn fast. You'll learn a bit about where trout live and how to tie on a fly.
Kid's Fly Fishing Camp Highlights:
- Steve R, Redmond, WA
Day 1 parents can drop kids off, meet the instructors, sign waivers, and participate in a short "parent's meeting" as the kids begin their fly fishing courses. We'll teach basic casting, knots, entomology, and general fly fishing principles.
About lunch time, we head to a local lake with our drift boats and kids will fish out of boats under careful guidance and learn how to put their cast into action! Students will be in a 3:1 ratio in drift boats. Our hope is that we catch a small variety of species and use the stillwater of a small lake to generate some quick action.
Parent pick-up on Day 1 will be right on the lakeshore and parents are welcome to come early and watch the action from the shoreline.
The Naches River outing begins on the lawn at Red's with a casting refresher and strategy session. After an hour of casting and planning, the group will break up into informal groups of 3 students per instructor head to the Naches River.
It's a small river and we have safety protocols to insure kids are supervised and safe.
Day 2 Naches River Wading Trip Itinerary
The grand finale. Students will be teamed up with licensed, trained, and certified professional river guides from Red's Fly Shop. We'll have a 3:1 ratio in each boat and kids will float the world-famous Yakima River Canyon.
The goal is to show kids western style drift boat fishing, and with guidance hopefully land a quality wild Rainbow trout on the Yakima River! Students that displayed some aptitude in rowing on the lake, may even get the opportunity to do some rowing in the slow and safe sections of the Yakima Canyon. Guide's discretion applies.
The camp will wrap up with a 4 pm meetup at Red's with parents, followed by a short award's ceremony. Dinner at Canyon River Grill is optional, we will follow up with directions on making reservations and joining our instructor team.
Many kids will already have rods, or they can borrow grandpa's or buy their own. Our goal isn't a few days of entertainment for your kids, or to sell you some gear. Our mission is to invest in their future and having their own fly rod is the first step. It's meaningful.
We'll help you navigate procuring gear within your budget, and you'll get a 15% discount on purchases for the camp adventure.
Required Gear and Packing List:
Payment in full is due at the time of reservation. Cancellations less than 14 days out will forfeit 50% of the camp fee, less than (7) days out will forfeit 100% of the fee UNLESS we are able to re-sell the space. It's a very reasonable policy, we'll do our best to get it filled.
Cancellations outside of 14 days will receive a 95% refund.
