Colton Honey’s journey into fly fishing began on the Big Hole River in southwestern Montana, where his father, Brian, taught him to row, cast, and fish. Born in Fife, Washington, Colton now calls Ellensburg home, where he has lived for nearly a decade. His first guided trip down the Yakima River in 2017 marked the beginning of a fulfilling career on the water.
A Passion for Steelhead
For Colton, nothing compares to the thrill of swinging flies for steelhead. His first swung steelhead ignited an obsession that has shaped his guiding career. With experience on iconic waters like the Yakima, Klickitat, Sandy (AK), Naches, and various tributary streams in Eastern Washington, Colton is a seasoned expert in finding and catching both trout and anadromous fish.
Guiding with Gratitude
Colton’s ideal clients are those who appreciate the beauty of the places they visit, not just the fish they catch. “Of course catching fish is the goal,” he says, “but those who value the effort it takes to explore incredible areas inspire us to go above and beyond every trip.” His clean boat and guide rig—his “superpower”—ensure his guests start each day with a sense of comfort and professionalism.

“Colton made it special for all of us.”
Colton took the time to teach my son casting and fishing techniques in a way that was both patient and encouraging. Even in the heat, he stayed positive and made the day enjoyable. He’s a solid guide and an even better person.

I’ve fished with Colton for years and have brought everyone from first-timers to 30-year veterans along. Every trip is thoughtful, fun, and tailored to the group. He’s not just a skilled guide—he creates a welcoming space that makes everyone feel comfortable and capable, which is rare and valuable in the fly fishing world.

“He knew the river—and how to make a 90th birthday trip shine.”
Colton was amazing with my friend on his 90th birthday float. He’s personable, knows the river inside and out, and handled every moment with grace and professionalism. The fish count and quality were impressive, and the overall setting was spectacular.

“The kind of guide you’ll always remember.”
Colton knows where the fish are, how to read water, and how to keep guests engaged and comfortable throughout the day. He’s calm, clear, and gets just as excited as you when you hook up. I’ve been guided by him multiple times—and every trip feels like time well spent with a friend who truly knows his stuff.

Life Beyond Guiding
When not on the river, Colton enjoys chasing bird dogs and tying flies in preparation for salmon and steelhead seasons. He and his wife, Trinity, have been married for two years and are expecting their first child. At home, they share their life with two German Shorthaired Pointers, Vedder and Nicks.
Dreams, Skills, and Advice
Colton has been fortunate to guide on his dream waters, the Sandy River, for kings and steelhead. But his skills go beyond fishing—he’s a master of the blood knot, tying it faster than a double surgeon’s. When it comes to advice for beginners, Colton keeps it light: “Enjoy the process. It’s kind of like a gambling addiction—the longer you go without a win, the closer you are to your next big one.”
What Guests Take Away
Colton’s goal is simple: he wants his guests to return. “People booking multiple times throughout the year is instant positive feedback that we’re doing things right.” With a Mini Loop Sculpin fly in hand and Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged as the pre-fishing soundtrack, Colton ensures every trip is memorable, fun, and productive.
Whether swinging flies for steelhead or exploring the Yakima River, a day with Colton Honey promises not just great fishing but also an unforgettable adventure with a guide who loves what he does.
