Upland Hunting // Off Season Prep work

Upland Hunting // Off Season Prep work

As the off-season settles in, it’s the perfect time to prepare for the next upland hunting season. Here are some essential tasks to keep you and your gear in top shape.

1. Deep Clean Your Bird Vest and Upland Gun of Choice

The off-season is an ideal time to give your bird vest and upland gun a thorough cleaning. Start by emptying all pockets in your vest, discarding trash, and checking for any wear and tear. Wash your vest according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and if it’s not machine washable, spot clean it and let it air dry.

For your gun, disassemble it carefully and clean each part with appropriate solvents and brushes. Pay special attention to the barrel, action, and any moving parts. Lubricate and reassemble, ensuring everything is in working order. Proper maintenance now will prevent any malfunctions during the next season.

2. Time to Take Care of those Boots You Neglected All Season

Your boots are crucial for comfort and safety in the field. Start by cleaning off any dirt and debris. Use a leather cleaner if they’re leather boots, or a suitable cleaner for synthetic materials. Once cleaned, inspect them for any damage or signs of wear.

Condition the leather with a high-quality conditioner (I recommend the Crispi Cream) to keep it supple and prevent cracking. For waterproof boots, reapply a waterproofing treatment (Crispi waterproofing works great for this)to ensure they stay dry in wet conditions. Finally, check the laces and replace them if they’re worn out. Nothing worse than when a lace brakes miles from the truck.

3. Staying In Shape

Staying in shape during the off-season is crucial for both you and your hunting dog. Regular physical activity ensures that you maintain the endurance, strength, and agility needed for the demanding upland hunting terrain. Develop a consistent fitness routine that includes a mix of cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Activities like hiking, running, and biking are excellent for building stamina. For your dog, incorporate a variety of exercises such as running, swimming, and agility training to keep them fit and ready for the field. Consistent training sessions will also help reinforce obedience and hunting commands, ensuring your dog’s skills stay sharp. By keeping yourself and your dog in peak physical condition, you'll both be ready to tackle any challenge the next hunting season brings.

4. Deep Dive into Your First Aid Kit and Add Any Missing Items

A well-stocked first aid kit is essential for any hunting trip. Take time now to review the contents of your kit. Check expiration dates on medications and replace any that are out of date. Ensure you have an adequate supply of bandages, antiseptics, and other basic first aid items.

Consider adding items that might be missing, such as a snake bite kit, trauma shears, or a space blanket. Personalize your kit to cater to specific needs you might have, like allergy medications or specific tools. A well-prepared first aid kit can make a significant difference in emergencies. This is a great time to check your notes from last season and add in missing items.

By taking these steps during the off-season, you'll be well-prepared and ready for the next upland hunting adventure.
