Setting Up Your Sage X Fly Rod
While there are LOT of reels, lines, and leaders that will compliment your new Sage X rod, these suggestions here are well balanced and make great all purpose outfits. Feel free to reach out to our staff with any questions regarding how to best setup your rod for your particular fishery.
Dry Fly Trout Setups
The shorter 3-4 weight rods are great for anglers that need a light rod, but still enough energy to fish open waters that require you punching it into the wind or sending a large hopper to the bank.
All Purpose Trout Rods
490-4 and 590-4 - These 9' rods are capable of pretty much any trout situation on earth. They are flexible enough for the short game, but when you lean on them these rods will punch that fly into a stiff wind and lay out on a dime. If you plan to fish streamers a fair amount, get the 5 weight.
Nymphing Specialty Rods
A really good indicator rod is priceless if you spend more time fishing nymphs than dry flies. Longer rods will roll cast, mend, and cast with more open loops to prevent tangles. The 10' 4 weight is perfect for anglers fishing primarily nymphs #16 - #8, the 597-4 is a great all around rod with an indicator, dry dropper, streamer, of even a dry fly at times. The 10' 5 weight (5101-4) is a great big water/lake fishing rod and will lift sinking lines up out of the water with ease. The 6 weight are best reserved for big trout, egg fishing in Alaska, and are pretty powerful sticks. Think big here on the 6 weights.
Streamer Fishing for Trophy Trout, Bass, and other Meat Eaters
9' rods will throw streamers most accurately if you fish around structure and need to hit precise spots. If you wade fish and use sink tips, get the 9'6" 6-7 weight rod and it will make casting sinking lines easy. The 790-4 doubles as a really good streamer rod for Alaska, Chile, Montana, Russia, and plays really well on Bonefish.
Steelhead and Salmon
Not every angler or every fishery requires the use of a two handed rod. Sometimes a single hand 8 weight is the best tool for the job. We like the 9'6" 8 weight for most steelhead fishing applications, but the 7 weights will fill the summer steelhead applications adequately and are easier to cast. Anglers targeting Salmon will need and appreciate the extra power of the 10' 8 weight rods. If you plan to wade deep or are fishing large water the 10' rod is a big advantage.
The Sage X makes a really great saltwater rod for anglers that want to double dip and use the same rod in freshwater. Typically saltwater don't mend, feed line, roll cast, or play the "short game" well. The Sage X will do all of this but still has the energy for making tough saltwater casts and has enough backbone to handle most situations. You will lose a bit of durability and power, but the tradeoff may be worth it.

Sage X Fly Rod Details and Specs
The new materials that Sage constructed this with is a higher density material that retains more power and responsiveness.
The X rods all-new fast action taper built with our KonneticHD Technology delivers greater blank recovery and a crisper tip stop - creating tighter, more efficient loops throughout all ranges of casting styles. This taper allows you to dig deeper into the rod and access the lower sections, shifting power closer to the angler. Decreased lateral and medial movement and vibrations in the blank result in a more accurate and efficient presentation, resulting in a performance driven, forgiving fast action blank - refining thesynergy between angler, rod, line, and fly.
Tighter loops. Its what we all strive for. A tight loop is accurate, efficient, easily controlled, and a way to command the water in front of you. Ushering in a new era of performance fast action fly rods, the X will dramatically enhance the way you fish through superior loop control. KonneticHD Technology is the next era in performance graphite rods. Optimizing our graphite-to-resin ratio, we have created a higher density (HD) fiber composite, resulting in lighter, stronger blanks which deliver unmatched recovery, energy transfer, and line/loop control. Building upon proprietary construction techniques developed for Konnetic Technology, KonneticHD gives us an elevated platform to achieve new levels in rod design.

New proprietary graphite/resin composite developed through exclusive partnerships. Advanced high density (HD) fiber positioning, enhanced laminate characteristics, and optimized manufacturing techniques increase composite modulus while maintaining durability.
KonneticHD creates amplified strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios as needed within the rod blank. Optimized fiber-to-fiber energy transfer along the length of the blank minimizes both lateral and medial vibrations, delivering accuracy in an easy loading blank with quick recovery, a crisp tip stop, and enhanced line feel for complete loop control. The highest energy transferring material we have ever created, opening new doors for our R&D Team to experiment with construction techniques, taper designs, and action profiles.Custom Packages Custom Rod, Reel, Line, and Leader packages set up Ready to Fish (RTF) for any fish that swims, set up the way you want, are available at great prices.
