Pat's Rubber Leg - The Best Stonefly Nymph
The Pat's Stonefly Nymph is the KING of productivity in the stonefly nymph realm. It is as standard as Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are to a 6 year old. Life without it.... well, lets just not go there. The Pat's Stone is available in a variety of sizes and colors to match any stonefly hatch. It is a play off the old girdle bug with a few "pimped out" features like long legs composed of dyna floss.
This is a very high quality bug. Must have fly to catch a bunch of nice fish on the Yakima, Deschutes, Madison, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Bighole, and various other great trout rivers. It is most commonly fished under a strike indicator with a small dropper nymph underneath it, but a lot of us like to fish it solo on light tippet because this fly looks so natural in the water. It seems to catch fish when other stonefly nymphs that have big beads, flashy bodies, or other jazzy features are non productive.
The size 4 also works as killer Summer Steelhead fly. We use it a lot on the Klickitat, Methow, Wenatchee, Grand Ronde, Deschutes, John Day, Clearwater, and other steelhead rivers.
