Red's Hopper-Dropper Fly Assortment
The classic "western" style of fishing - Hoppers and Droppers.
No challenges too great, the hopper-dropper combo overcomes many of the obstacles of a day on the river by filling a niche- the one between hatch periods- and combining a subsurface searching pattern with a surface searching pattern. It's success relies on the "foamy" high riding hopper allowing a heavy, fast sinking bead headed nymph to ride the currents at mid level, where many fish rest between insect activity. It's like having a hook in your indicator, and that makes some people less uncomfortable. We as anglers often wonder what the trout are doing when the sun is high and the insect activity is low. Grasshoppers being primarily active in full daylight, are always being blown onto the water by gusty western winds, and the droppers are generalized searching patterns that imitate many different sub-aquatic insects. The dropper flies are usually tied 12" to 36" off the hook bend of the hopper flies with 3,4 or 5x tippet, as conditions allow. About this kit...
