ASCENSION BAY FLIES

Anglers will cast at all the Grand Slam species in a week of fishing, plus Snook, Barracuda, and Jacks.  Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, and Snook are the primary targets and where your fly selection should be targeted. Bonefish flies should be small, lightweight, and have beadchain eyes.  Weighted eyes are typically unnecessary and spook a lot of fish. There is almost no tidal current, so heavy flies are unnecessary for Bones. Permit flies should be ample in the tan color scheme, and make sure to have a variety of 4's and 6's, with a #2 available in the event you find a fish in deep water. A few large shrimp patterns are also good for Permit. Tarpon flies should be small with 2/0 being the biggest, with most of your patterns being 1/0.  Snook fishing is best done with completely unweighted flies and we like brushy style 1/0 baitfish flies. Bring a couple of flies for Barracuda, along with wire leader. A popper is essential as is at least (1) Needlefish pattern.

Fly Count for a Well Prepared Angler:

(24) Bonefish Flies #6/#8

(12) Tarpon Flies #1/0 - #2/0

(6) Snook Flies #1/0 or #2

(12) Permit Crabs  #4/#6

(2+) Barracuda Flies - Popper and a Needlefish
